Editor's note: A touring exhibition showcasing imperial temple murals and painted sculptures of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties is currently on view at the China National Arts and Crafts Museum in Beijing.
The exhibition focuses on artistic masterpieces housed in historic temples across the capital, including Fahai Temple and Dahui Temple. Through a comprehensive exploration that traces these works from their historical origins and production techniques to their cultural significance, it offers fresh insights into the role of Ming dynasty murals and painted sculptures within the broader narrative of Chinese art history.
Leveraging digital technologies such as high-precision scanning, immersive projection, interactive installations and gamified experiences, the exhibition uses innovative methods to allow the public access to these immovable cultural treasures. By combining academic research, digital presentation, intangible cultural heritage techniques and creative cultural merchandise, the show presents a thoughtful example of how traditional mural art can be adapted for the digital era. The exhibition runs through July 17.
