Veteran goalkeeper Fabio saved two spot kicks as Fluminense reached the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals on Tuesday by beating Independiente Rivadavia 5-4 on penalties.
After a goalless draw in Brazil last week, Fluminense suffered a blow in the 57th minute of the second leg in Mendoza when Agustin Canobbio was sent off for a second yellow card after a bad foul.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Colombian forward Kevin Serna put Fluminense ahead with a 75th-minute strike after combining with midfielder Hercules.
Alex Arce converted a stoppage-time penalty after an Ignacio handball to force the game into a shootout.
Fabio, 45, saved attempts from Jose Florentin and Rodrigo Atencio as Fluminense kept alive its hopes of a second Libertadores title.
In Tuesday's only other Copa Libertadores round-of-16 fixture, Estudiantes progressed with a 3-0 away win over Universidad Catolica.
