China calls for political settlement in response to U.S. secondary sanctions: spokesperson

Sanctions and pressure cannot resolve problems, as they only heighten tensions, escalate the situation and serve no one's interests, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

Spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular news briefing when asked to comment on U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's threat that the United States could impose secondary sanctions on countries trading with Iran.

Lin said China called on all parties to exercise rationality and restraint, avoid moves that could further fuel conflicts and undermine global economic development and financial stability, and return to the right track of dialogue and negotiation for a political settlement at an early date.

"China will closely follow relevant developments and take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," Lin added.
