Qinghai carpets weave tradition into global markets

Editor's note: From traditional Tibetan carpet-making to a now global industry, Shengyuan Carpet is weaving a new story for northwest China's Qinghai province. Based in Xining, the company has expanded its reach to markets around the world, with overseas sales accounting for 42% of its total sales. The carpets have been exported to countries and regions including the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and the Middle East. 

Back home, the company's efforts to train local farmers and herders in carpet weaving have helped create jobs and increase incomes, showing how a distinctive local industry can contribute to rural revitalization while carrying Qinghai's traditional craftsmanship beyond the plateau.
