Augsburg signs South Korea wing-back Seol

Augsburg has signed South Korea international Seol Young-woo from Red Star Belgrade on a contract running until June 2030, adding a versatile option to their flanks, the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday.

The 27-year-old arrives three days after Mads Pedersen left Augsburg for Hertha Berlin and will wear the number seven shirt at his new club.

Seol spent the past two years with Red Star, making 101 competitive appearances across domestic and European competitions, including the Champions League and Europa League. He contributed eight goals and 16 assists during that spell.

"Youngwoo brings a lot of experience at international level through European club competitions and the national team," Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber said. "His flexibility as a wing-back and his high speed will give our game additional impetus and further increase competition in our squad on the flanks," he added.

Seol can operate on either side, giving Augsburg another alternative alongside Marius Wolf, Robin Fellhauer and summer signing Hennes Behrens.

The South Korean moved to Serbia from hometown club Ulsan in the summer of 2024, making Red Star his first European destination.

At international level, Seol has made 37 appearances for South Korea. He started all three of his country's group matches at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, playing the full 90 minutes in two of them.

"I am really looking forward to my time in Augsburg," Seol said. "The Bundesliga is a great and extremely demanding league in which I want to prove myself and continue to develop. I can hardly wait to play in the WWK ARENA in front of our fans, contribute my qualities and work hard together with the team towards our goals."

Seol becomes the fourth South Korean to represent Augsburg in the Bundesliga after Koo Ja-Cheol, Ji Dong-Won and Hong Jeong-Ho.
