Kane double sends Bayern into German Cup second round

Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich recovered from an early setback to beat second-tier Osnabruck 4-1 and advance to the second round of the German Cup on Wednesday.

Osnabruck stunned the holders after five minutes when striker Robin Meissner capitalized on hesitant defending from Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae before firing an unstoppable effort from 30 meters into the top-right corner.

The hosts remained compact and threatened again through Ismael Badjie, while Bayern did not create a clear chance until the 18th minute. Joshua Kimmich's lofted pass caused problems in the Osnabruck defense and Robin Fabinski's attempted clearance dropped to Kane, who converted from close range to level.

Osnabruck continued to play with confidence, forcing Jonas Urbig into a save, but Bayern turned the contest around six minutes later. Luis Diaz was denied by goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey following a quick transition, only for Tom Bischof to finish the rebound.

Vincent Kompany's side controlled possession after taking the lead, although Krumrey kept out Michael Olise shortly before halftime.

Bayern remained patient after the restart as Osnabruck defended deep and looked to counter. Ismael Saibari and Kane had chances before substitute Lennart Karl intercepted a pass and released Olise in the 73rd minute, with the Frenchman lifting the ball over Krumrey.

Kane completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 86th minute after Jannik Muller fouled Aleksandar Pavlovic.

"We knew Osnabruck play good football, and they showed that with the goal. They started well, but we stayed calm and got the equalizer. These are difficult games against difficult opponents," said Bischof.

"We didn't go through and that's what the cup is about. Overall, I am satisfied, but if you want to advance, everything really must come together. In the end, Bayern deserved to win," said Osnabruck coach Timo Schultz.
