China moves to expand medical insurance coverage for gig workers

China is moving to expand medical insurance coverage to more workers in flexible and new forms of employment as the country adapts its social security system to a changing labor market, the country's health authorities announced Tuesday.

Over the next three years, China will seek to enroll more flexible workers, migrant workers and people in new forms of employment in the basic medical insurance system, according to a notice issued by seven government departments, including the National Healthcare Security Administration.

During the period, new enrollment and contribution models tailored to people in new forms of employment will be explored, while services for flexible workers will be improved to make enrollment easier, the notice stated.
