This marks Zverev's second grand slam singles title after his triumph at Roland Garros this year.

Zverev took victory in all previous five matches against Shelton and had a smooth start to win the first set 6-3 in the US Open final.

The eighth seed American bounced back a little bit to force the second set to a tie-breaker, but Zverev still managed to win 7-6 (2). Then, Shelton won 90 percent on first serve to take a 7-5 win in the third set.

In the fourth set, the 29-year-old Zverev didn't give Shelton many chances to break early and seal the victory 6-2.
