Antonelli wins F1 Spanish GP after Norris setback

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth Formula 1 victory of the season in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, capitalizing on a virtual safety car that cost Lando Norris the chance to become the first winner at Madrid's new Madring circuit.

Antonelli finished 4.3 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Norris third after a badly timed virtual safety car and a slow pit stop transformed a race the McLaren driver had controlled from the start.

Norris had built a lead of more than six seconds by lap 13, with Antonelli struggling with front-left tyre graining, but the race changed when Lance Stroll crashed into the wall on lap 15.

The VSC was deployed moments after Norris had passed the pit entry, allowing several of his rivals to stop at reduced time cost. Norris had to complete another lap before pitting, and his problems were compounded by a seven-second stop that dropped him to fifth.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who had started on hard tyres and did not stop under the VSC, inherited the lead ahead of Antonelli and Verstappen.

Leclerc's long first stint kept him at the front until lap 48, when he finally pitted and emerged fourth. That handed Antonelli the lead, and the Italian controlled the remaining laps to seal his eighth win of the campaign and extend his points lead over second-placed George Russell to 81.

"It was a very difficult race - not straightforward at all, especially trying to manage tyres," said Antonelli.

"I think today it's good to win but it doesn't feel as good because I think Lando today deserved the win but overall, we take it."

"Other than that, it was a very strong race, especially on the hard we had good pace. Now we have to keep pushing."

Behind him, Verstappen held off Norris in a late battle for second, although the Red Bull driver attracted the attention of race control after cutting the track while defending his position.

The outcome was particularly frustrating for Norris after an impressive recovery from a difficult buildup to the race.

The world champion had missed much of Friday's second practice because of a gearbox problem, forcing him to rely heavily on data gathered by teammate Oscar Piastri.

Despite that lack of track time, Norris took a surprise pole position by just 0.011 seconds from Antonelli, with Verstappen third.

Antonelli twice went off the track while attempting to pass Norris on the opening lap, briefly allowing Verstappen into second. The Dutchman was subsequently told to surrender positions after gaining an advantage off the circuit, before repassing Lewis Hamilton for third on lap five.

Hamilton's race quickly unraveled after he reported that his brake pedal was going long. He fell from fourth to 10th before retiring on lap seven, telling Ferrari he had no brakes.

Despite pre-race predictions of an incident-filled Grand Prix, prompted by driver concerns over the Madring's difficult corner entries, close walls and limited overtaking opportunities, the race's only intervention came as a result of Stroll's accident.

Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Russell and Liam Lawson, while Franco Colapinto took seventh. Piastri took eighth, with Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg completing the top 10.

The next round of the 2026 Formula 1 season is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix around the streets of Baku on September 26.
