Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo has been appointed manager of Ecuador's national team on a deal running until the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) said on Sunday.

The 50-year-old, who built his reputation at River Plate, replaces Sebastian Beccacece, who left after Ecuador was eliminated by co-host Mexico in the round of 32 at this year's World Cup.

"We sought out Marcelo Gallardo because of his achievements, but above all for what he represents. Welcome to Ecuador, Marcelo," FEF president Francisco Egas said in a video posted on social media.

A former midfielder who was capped 44 times for Argentina, Gallardo is regarded as one of the most successful coaches in River Plate's history.

He won two Copa Libertadores titles and a Copa Sudamericana during his first spell in charge of the Buenos Aires club from 2014 to 2022, before a second stint from 2024 to 2026 that yielded fewer trophies.

Gallardo will take charge of Ecuador for the first time in a friendly against South Korea in Suwon on Sept. 24.
