Atletico ride derby storm to beat 10-man Real Madrid

FC Barcelona heads into the international break top of La Liga, five points clear of Atletico Madrid and six ahead of Real Madrid after Atletico won the Madrid derby 2-1 on Sunday.

After a first half with few clear chances, the game changed dramatically in the 52nd minute when Atletico was awarded a penalty after Dean Huijsen brought down Giuliano Simeone, with the Real Madrid defender also sent off.

Alex Grimaldo made no mistake from the spot, and Atletico quickly doubled its lead after Julian Alvarez set up Jonathan David in the 59th minute.

Antonio Rudiger powered in a header from a Bernardo Silva free kick in the closing minutes, but Atletico held on for a vital win.

Real Betis was denied three points away to Deportivo La Coruna by Diego Villares' late equalizer after Cucho Hernandez had put Betis ahead on the stroke of halftime.

Goals from Ayoze Perez, Alberto Moleiro and Georges Mikautadze gave Villarreal a 3-1 home win over Levante.

Ivan Romero scored a spectacular goal to cancel out Ayoze's opener before Moleiro and Mikautadze sealed Villarreal's victory in the second half.

Ivan Azon scored the only goal in the 85th minute as Getafe beat Malaga 1-0, while Ander Barrenetxea struck an injury-time winner to give Real Sociedad a 3-2 victory away to Valencia.

Luka Sucic's goal and Carlos Soler's penalty against his former club twice put Real Sociedad ahead, with Aaron Mayol's volley and an own goal making it 2-2 before Barrenetxea scored from a corner.

On Saturday, Raphinha scored his second hat-trick in as many matches as Barcelona came from behind to beat Sevilla 3-1 and maintain its perfect record.
