A Chinese national was killed in a stabbing in central Melbourne on Friday night, and a suspect has been arrested, the Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne said on Saturday.

Victoria Police said two men, believed to be food delivery riders, confronted a man suspected of tampering with their bikes near Queen Victoria Market at around 8:10 p.m. on Friday.

An altercation broke out, leaving one rider dead at the scene and another hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said a 51-year-old man was arrested on Saturday morning and remained in custody.

The Chinese Consulate-General said it had activated its emergency consular protection mechanism and urged local police to thoroughly investigate the case and bring the perpetrator to justice.

The consulate said it had contacted the victim's family and was assisting with arrangements.
