Indonesia's Adam Air Monday evening confirmed reports that one of its commercial airliners went missing in the air space above Makssar, South Sulawesi.

Adam Air's District Manager Natalia Budi said: "So far, we have not yet received any further report on the plane's whereabouts. It was carrying 96 passengers, including seven children and four babies".

The plane took off from Surabaya's Juanda International Airport at 12:59 local time (0559 GMT). It was supposed to have arrived at Manado's Sam Ratulangi airport at 15:14 local time (0814 GMT).

"We are now busy serving relatives of the plane's passengers who are asking about their loved ones," she was quoted by Antara news agency as saying in Surabaya, capital of East Java Province.
