Time: Every Friday and Saturday

Venue: The Imperial Granary

With the staging of a 600 year-old Kunqu Opera on a 600 year-old site, the Imperial Granary production of "The Peony Pavilion" brings together China's physical and intangible cultural heritage. Director Lin Zhaohua and master Kunqu performer Wang Shiyu bring the opera back to life as it was originally performed. Abandoning the staging and performance techniques of the late Qing Dynasty, more than 400 years after "The Peony Pavilion" was first introduced, Lin and Wang present a more intimate production. Period-accurate costumes and props are displayed inside a truly Ming-style performance space which retains that integrity and aesthetic of its 600 year-old surroundings. An exhibition of traditional calligraphy connects the acts of the opera, while the sumptuous attire of the actors and the elegant musical accompaniment combine to transport the audience into higher artistic spheres.
