During the first several years of the 21st century, Chinese people began to pay most of their attention to individual taste and style of clothes. The main function of clothes was no longer just for keeping warm. Instead, it became a representation of charm and personal character. Traditional Chinese garments and cheongsams are becoming increasingly popular as Chinese clothing continues to catch the eyes of the world.

'In the Mood of Love' – a film by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai – popularized the cheongsam in 2000.
