Ford Focus unveiled at 2010 NAIS in Detriot

U.S. automaker Ford's CEO Alan Mulally unveiled the all-new Ford Focus at the 2010 North America International Auto Show (NAIAS) on Monday.

The newly unveiled car has been charged with the mission of leading the company's strategy to produce and sell global vehicles at a profit across the world.

Ford has stumbled at times to tailor automobiles according to regional needs, which often resulted in costly engineering and manufacturing. The current Focus on sale in the U.S. is completely different from the more expensive version in Europe.

"The new Focus was designed and engineered to meet the converging needs of buyers across the world," said Mulally.

Ford hopes to cash in on U.S. demand for compact cars that is expected to grow by 25 percent to 3.4 million units by 2012.

"This is the richest opportunity for us around the globe," said Mark Fields, head of Ford's Americas unit.

The new Focus platform consolidates three previous platforms and will be used for upward of 2 million vehicles a year, including small SUVs and MPVs. So when it hits the market this year, several models are available for customers like a sedan and a three-door hatchback.

Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr., also announced plans on Monday at NAIS to offer an all-electric Focus beginning in 2012.
