China Unicom has invested 700 million yuan (US$103 million) to build telecommunications infrastructure for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai and launched a bilingual daily newspaper that users can download onto their mobile phones and also watch videos, the country's No. 2 mobile carrier said yesterday.

It will be the first mobile newspaper with video content nationwide, thanks to China Unicom's cooperation with Ku6.com and traditional media.

"Visitors can know the latest information and watch video clips through the newspaper" on their mobile phones, Lu Dongliang, vice general manager of China Unicom's Shanghai branch, said during a press conference yesterday.

For overseas visitors, Shanghai Unicom has signed agreements with Shanghai Daily to jointly develop 3G applications and an English-language mobile Website for the Expo.

Through the cooperation, people can really "watch Expo events" on handsets at any place at any time, according to Li Shanyou, founder and president of Ku6, now a subsidiary of Nasdaq-listed Shanda Entertainment.
