Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation, also known as Angang, has overcome all obstacles to its planned steel plant investment in the U.S. and construction is scheduled to start in September, a top manager from Angang said.

The manager said that the project is proceeding normally and opposition from within the U.S. will not affect it.

Li Guotuan, a researcher from the Baosteel Research Institute, said that if Angang successfully sets up the steel works, it will be the first successful case of Chinese steel enterprises investing in the US and will set a good example for the overseas expansion of Chinese enterprises.

Early in July, 50 U.S. congressmen wrote to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner claiming that the joint project between Angang and the U.S. Steel Development Co. would damage the job market and even threaten national security.

China's business press carried the story above on Friday. China.org.cn has not checked the stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.
