Nokia, the world largest handset maker by units shipped, will slash prices of its smartphones by up to 15 percent this month in a bid to stop its market share from further declining, Sina Tech reported Wednesday, citing two anonymous industry insiders.

The price cuts apply primarily to Nokia's high-end phones. According to one of the sources, Nokia's flagship smartphone N8, multimedia phone C7 and business phone E6 will see their prices cut by 15 percent. Other models will also see more moderate price drops.

"There will not very big cuts to any one model, but the scale - across the portfolio – hasn't been seen for a very, very long time," the industry insider told Sina Tech.

A Nokia spokesperson denied the price cut was unusual, saying that it was just a routine business decision.

Nokia is expected to report losses in the second and third fiscal quarter of the year, due to a continuing slide in its smartphone market share. According to research company Gartner, Nokia's share in that market had dropped to 25.5 percent in the first quarter, compared to the 39 percent a year ago. Many analysts believe this figure will continue to decline.

China's business press carried the story above on Wednesday.
