Rupert Murdoch, 80, has arrived in London to take personal charge of a phone-hacking scandal at British tabloid News of the World and limit damage to News Corp, the paper's owner and the world's largest news conglomerate.
The News Corp chairman and CEO, who was at a conference in Idaho, decided to close the paper last week in a bid to save the company’s takeover of profitable pay-TV operator British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB).
British government lawyers are drawing up plans to block Murdoch's bid to buy out BSkyB, the Independent newspaper said on Monday.
Opposition Labor party leader Ed Miliband said on Sunday that he would force parliament to vote this week if Cameron did not take steps to halt the US$14-billion bid by Murdoch's News Corp for the 61 percent of BSkyB that it does not already own.

Murdoch's own Sunday Times reported that a 2007 internal investigation at News of the World had found evidence that phone hacking was more widespread than the company had admitted and that staff had illegally paid police for information.

The chief editor of News of the World, Colin Myler, and other staff gathered outside the News Corp's headquarters on Saturday in an emotional scene to send off the newspaper. Its final edition featured "Thank you & goodbye" on its front page and an apology for having “lost our way.”
