COFCO acquires 99% stake in Australia's Tully

China Oil & Foodstuffs Corp. (COFCO) said Tuesday it had purchased an almost 99 percent stake in TullySugar, an Austrilian sugar company. COFCO paid 44 Australian dollars (US$47) per share, valuing TullySugar at A$136 million (US$145.2 million).

COFCO purchased 31.5 percent of its stake from MackaySugar, Australia's second largest sugar miller, which originally competed with COFCO to takeover Tully.

MackaySugar decided to sell its stake in Tully after it failed to acquire a controlling stake, a spokesperson for the firm said Monday.

"Achieving complete ownership will remove all uncertainty and allow COFCO to deliver on its commitments to local growers, the industry and the community," said Pan Honghuan, deputy general manager of Top Glory, COFCO's local subsidiary.

The takeover battle for Tully Sugar stared in April. In July, Agribusiness Bunge Ltd. withdrew its bid and sold its shares in Tully to COFCO, which gave the company a 61.25 percent stake in the company.
