KFC admits pricy beverage made with powder

US fast food retailer KFC admitted it mixes instant powder with water to make its soybean milk after an anonymous user Thursday posted a picture revealing the preparation method on Sina's Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging site.
The unnamed blogger posted a picture showing soybean powder boxes piled at the doorway of a KFC store in Guangdong Province, starting a heated discussion online. The picture was reposted 30,000 times.
"Even cheap soy milk sold by some street vendors is brewed. Why is KFC's pricy soy milk just a mixture of water and powder?" wrote one blogger.
Responding to online criticism, KFC said it didn't cheat customers because it never advertised its soy milk as freshly brewed.

According to one journalist's calculation, a bag of 480 gram soybean powder sells for only 15 yuan, indicating a cup of soy milk only costs about 0.7 yuan. But KFC's hot soybean milk charges 5.5 yuan per cup, and iced soybean milk 6.5 yuan.

KFC claimed the soybean powder it uses is made of pure ground soybean without any additives. Contrary to KFC's statement, a powder manufacturer said the powder is mixed with additives to prevent it from going sour.
