Internet users in Beijing spent an average of 9,230 yuan online last year, ranking the capital's netizens second in online payment platform Alipay's survey of Internet spending throughout China.

Beijing consumers' total online spending ranks fifth in the country behind Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Jiangsu, accounting for 7 percent of total spending in the country.

Alipay's survey covers its 650 million registered users, taking into account online purchases, credit card repayments, and the payment of electricity, water and telephone bills.

China's business press carried the story above on Tuesday.
