The China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and South Africa's national oil company PetroSA have signed a framework agreement to join efforts in developing Project Mthombo, a crude refinery in South Africa.

Project Mthombo is a PetroSA initiative to build a world-class crude refinery in Port Elizabeth.

In 2012, the two companies signed an agreement to work together on a commercial model study for the project.

The latest framework, in which the two sides agreed to integrate the Industrial Development Corporation in the next phase of the project, has created the basis for accelerating work on the refinery, said Sinopec.

The framework also includes cooperation in oil and gas exploration in South Africa and surrounding countries, as well as the investigation of downstream opportunities, the building of storage and logistics infrastructure in south African regions.
