A villa privately built on the rooftop of a residential building in downtown Beijing has prompted complaints from neighbours living below, Morning Post reports.

When viewed from the ground, the villa could easily pass for a scenery spot or part of the rockeries. However, according to a lady surnamed Yan, who lives on the top floor of the building, the villa is hidden in the rockeries.

Ms. Yan said her neighbour, Professor Zhang bought the rooftop building and reconstructed it into a 2-storey-high villa, which has caused leakage problems in other apartments.

Ms. Yan also said that construction work has gone on for 6 years now and she remains annoyed by the construction noises.

Yang Shichun, a nationally registered Grade A Constructor said that reconstruction should first be approved by the designer of the building, or it may cause overload and leakage problems.

Professor Zhang has been instructed to tear down the illegal building, according to the property managers.
