Acknowledgements

This book is a distillation of many years of theory and practice, reflections on and direct experience with development finance. I am greatly indebted to many colleagues and friends who have put so much hard work into its editing and publishing. The contents of this book – including narratives, interviews, and previously published essays – stretch far back into the past and draw from a wide range of sources. My colleagues at China Development Bank's Policy Research Office – Li Xiaotao, Yang Hua, Liu Jin, and Xu Fei, to name a few – were invaluable in compiling this manuscript and presenting the various texts in a manner that is organized and reader-friendly. I would also like to thank my student Ma Rongbao for providing me with related literature and source materials, as well as Feng Qihua and Zhang Bin for organizing the photographs and their captions.

Thanks to He Jiangtao of the New Trend Integrated Group, Ji Shengkang of the Beijing Times Publishing Center, and many other colleagues who contributed their creative input to the editing and design process; to my publishers at China CITIC Press (Chinese edition) and Foreign Languages Press (English edition); to the journalists whose interviews have been excerpted in this book, including Fu Zimei of People's Daily, Wang Zhaobin of Qiushi, Wang Lu of Economic Daily, Sally Wu of Phoenix TV, and Ma Hongtao of CCTV; and to China Fotobank and Sun Ronggang, Wan Fei, and Lu Weibin for providing photographs. To all of the above I extend my heartfelt thanks.

Finally, I owe a special debt of gratitude to the entire CDB family, current and former colleagues alike. Everything that we've accomplished – from CDB's impressive business performance to the widespread recognition of development finance – was made possible by the pioneering enterprise and selfless dedication of each and every CDB employee.

Wisdom is born from experience. The insights presented in these pages owe their value to the years of first-hand experience I have gained at CDB working alongside all of those who are committed to the cause of development finance.

Development finance is a vast frontier with a bright future. Exploring that frontier is our profession; ensuring that future is our mission.
