A malfuction in rail ticket vending machines caused disruptions for travelers in Shanghai and some other cities in the east of China yesterday morning.

Passengers in Shanghai, Nanjing in the eastern Jiangsu Province, Qingdao in the eastern Shandong Province and Xiamen in the southeastern Fujian Province could not get tickets from machines for more than an hour from 6:40am.
Rail authorities said the glitch was caused by a failure in data transfer between official ticket booking website www.12306.cn and vending machines.
The machines were back in service after 8am.
During the disruption, Shanghai railway authorities allowed affected passengers on trains provided they could show the confirmation of ticket purchase message sent by 12306.
China’s railway system will be severely tested during the Spring Festival rush expected to start on January 23.
According to Shanghai railway authorities, the city is currently in a ticket selling peak expected to last until Friday.
Among the most popular routes are services to Chongqing and the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou in southwestern China.
