London's second largest taxi company Green Tomato Cars has pulled out from a deal with Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD to launch the city's first pure electric taxi fleet.
Green Tomato Cars said that the decision was a joint one, but did not reveal why the deal fell through. The company said it would continue with its zero emission plans, and that it was testing Hyundai fuel cell vehicles.
BYD, which Warren Buffet has also invested in, previously beat global rivals including Nissan in the London bid to put zero emission taxis into use before 2018.
The London mayor's office said that taxis are responsible for more than one third of automobile emission in London, and the promotion of electric vehicles in the city only represented a part of the British government's larger plan.
BYD's European division manager He Yipeng said the company was also contacting other partners to roll out e6 pure electric cars, in a bid to sell the Chinese environmental friendly cars to other taxi companies in London.
