Liu explained that the shift reflects the company's assessment of PV energy's future, which lies in building-integrated PV generation instead of in massive solar power mills, because rooftops are "inexhaustible."

The view was also shared by Hanergy's United Kingdom branch CEO Dr. Toby Ferenczi. He said on Saturday that there is a growing tendency to invest in home solar panels, because these panels provide a "big reduction in people's electricity bill." He added that while solar energy in general is being recognized as important, Europeans tend to be "more aware of its environmental benefits than the actual savings it will bring," signaling that a new wave of investment in PV panels for home use will likely take place in the West and will soon influence China.

In 2013, Hanergy formed a partnership with IKEA in Britain and became the only third-party vendor in IKEA's stores across the U.K. Ferenczi recognized that the cooperation with IKEA was a big "assurance to customers" about the PV panels' reputation and quality.

The product launch in Chengdu was not Hanergy's first move into consumer products. Early this February, the company's founder and chairman Li Hejun, now one of the biggest billionaires in China, personally unveiled portable PV products like school bags and tents that have flexible solar panels attached to them. However, massive promotion campaigns for such products, though much anticipated, did not really materialize afterwards, so their release was more of an attempt to test the waters.

It is also widely known that Hanergy has been developing all-electric automobiles in collaboration with an undisclosed automaker. Hanergy's Liu Ming was confirmed to have said that "conditions have matured for Hanergy to develop solar-powered cars." He said that five types of all-solar-powered cars -- all economy type -- will roll off production lines before the end of the year, but it may take a while for these cars to be produced in numbers large enough to make them available in the market.
