Apple Inc has expanded its trade-in program for iPhones and iPads to include mainland China.
Apple first introduced the "Reuse and Recycle" trade-in program for iPhone in the U.S. in August 2013 and soon expanded the program to include iPads and Apple computers as well.
Starting from March 31, Chinese consumers are able to take older iPhones and iPads to Apple Stores for credit against the company's products. The company is partnering with Foxconn Technology Group for this program.
According to Apple, its China trade-in program is only available at its retail stores, while online application has not yet been launched.
Under the program, the price of a new iPhone 5S will fetch no more than 2,000 yuan, and an iPhone 4 is only 250 yuan, according to a report by Caijing, a prominent Chinese business magazine.
Apple has also expanded its trade-in program in the United States, Britain, France and Italy to allow owners of Android, BlackBerry and Windows phones exchange their old phones for a new iPhone at Apple stores.
According to the plan, customers who sell their old smartphones to Apple will have to purchase a new iPhone 5c, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus immediately, although online reviews claim that the expanded trade-in program is more about offering customers convenience rather than "a particularly good deal" for old devices.
Apple's effort to take in competitors' products is a clear attempt to encourage potential customers to switch from competing brands and operating systems.
In September, Apple posted a support document titled "Move content from your Android phone to iPhone." The company is increasingly acknowledging its competitors – something it simply did not do just a few years ago – in an attempt to boost sales.
