The city is home to one of China's marine economic development areas.

Xi Jinping has made a stop at an industrial park on an island off the city's coast.

"We have just laid out the China Manufacturing 2025 strategy. We should push the manufacturing industry toward the top of the pyramid, especially in areas such as engineering and equipment manufacturing."

Zhoushan is also home to part of the country's strategic oil reserve.

"The strategic oil reserve is of great importance for our country. The oil reserve base in Zhoushan is complete, and is blessed with a bright future. We should make full use of its advantage, and use it to lay a solid foundation for the country's oil reserve strategy."

Xi Jinping is also calling for a greater focus on the development of Zhejiang's vast rural areas.
