Cards from China's largest bank card association, UnionPay, will be accepted by the majority of automated teller machines (ATMs) in Germany, a big step in increasing their global presence.

UnionPay International said on Tuesday that Deutsche Bank, the country's largest bank, has agreed to accept UnionPay cards in its 6,500 ATMs, more than 60 percent of the country's total.

Ge Huayong, chairman of the parent company China UnionPay, said the company is improving its presence in Europe, with Germany one of the most important markets as a growing number of Chinese tourists travel there.

UnionPay users can currently swipe cards at around 80,000 commercial outlets across Germany, including duty-free shops, department stores and chain stores.

The cards have been accepted in 38 European countries and regions, with Britain, Switzerland and Austria enjoying full coverage.

A statement by UnionPay International said the cards are now accepted in more than 150 countries and regions.
