The advancement of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) integration process in recent years has brought Yangjiang closer to other cities such as Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen. It has laid a solid foundation for cooperation between the four cities, and is providing more opportunities for regional development.

Several issues were brought up in an economic development experience-sharing session held on July 16 between Hengqin Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and the four PRD cities mentioned above. The issues include: what Hengqin can contribute to PRD development, and how to balance regional development among the four cities. Experts gave suggestions on regional cooperation, including Zhou Mi, deputy director of the Institute of World Economy at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce; Sun Yuanxin, deputy director of Research Institute for Shanghai FTZ at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics; and Zhang Guangnan, an expert with the Center For Studies of Hong Kong, Macao and Pearl River Delta at Sun Yat-Sen University.

The experts said that the Hengqin FTZ can serve as a platform for the optimization of innovative resource allocation among the four regions. The "radiation effect" of the Hengqin FTZ to attract investment, talents, technology and policy advantage will become a motivation for regional development. Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Yangjiang will seek further cooperation with Hengqin on industries and resources, enhancing the competitiveness of the PRD area, and balancing the development of east and west Guangdong.
