Galeries Lafayette is expecting a huge revenue boost from its department store in Beijing, following the introduction of a tax rebate policy to encourage spending by international travelers to the capital.

The policy, which became effective in Beijing and Shanghai on July 1, allowed an 11-percent tax rebate on consumer product purchases by foreign travelers. Galeries Lafayette was among the first batch of 57 qualified stores in the capital.

According to Galeries Lafayette Beijing, international shoppers who have spent at least 500 yuan (US$81.3) in one day can get the refund; all items except those from the gourmet shop are covered.

The store has launched a special promotion, offering discounts of up to 70 percent on selected items in addition to the 11-percent rebate for foreign shoppers.

CEO Paul Burke is confident that the new tax rebate policy will enhance the performance sheet of the store, which is located in the city's vibrant Xidan commercial area.

"Beijing and Xidan have a long history as a place of commerce linking cultures. Galeries Lafayette is honored to be a part of this and provides a meeting ground to showcase marvels from both the East and the West to customers both local and foreign," he said.

Since opening its doors in the autumn of 2013, Galeries Lafayette Beijing has become a major feature of Xidan, a must-go area in the inner city for many tourists.

The store has a total floor space of over 47,000 square meters on six floors. In addition to carrying the heritage of Galeries Lafayette, the concept of the store focuses on several key differentiations including a wide array of unique, exclusive selections that can only be found there.
