As the longest pipeline with the biggest investment in China, the Hengqin underground comprehensive pipeline has a total length of 33.4 kilometers, which has saved 400,000 square meters of land, according to Hengqin authorities.

"Hengqin New Area covers 106.46 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers can be explored and developed. Disposable land is rare," said Liu Yong, an official from the Public Construction Bureau of the Managing Committee of Hengqin New Area.

How to use the limited amount of land to the maximum efficiency is an important issue for Hengqin's development. Constructing the underground pipeline is one of the best methods to make the best use of land.

The comprehensive pipeline project has installed the pipeline in a three-dimensional way instead of on a plane, decreasing the land use under the roads, said Yan Lisheng, an engineer at the City Public Resources Operation and Management Company of Hengqin, Zhuhai.

The pipeline project, with a total investment of 1.98 billion yuan, began construction in March, 2010.

Though the cost of the pipeline project is high, it will generate over eight billion yuan, said Liu Yong .
