China concluded a tone-setting rural work conference on Friday, vowing to step up supply-side structural reforms in agriculture to ensure abundant and quality farm produce.

China will improve the quality and efficiency of its agricultural product supply to satisfy market demands, according to the two-day Central Rural Work Conference that mapped out rural work for 2016 and the 13th Five-year Plan period (2016-2020).

Priority should be given to the reduction of excessive inventories and production costs, and overcome weak points of the sector, according to an official statement after the meeting.

The meeting agreed that China should follow the concept of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development in its rural work for the next five years.

In a written instruction, Chinese President Xi Jinping said China's agricultural and rural development still faces many challenges, and that greater efforts should be made to support rural development and advance rural reforms.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told the conference that China should optimize its agricultural structure, promote large-scale production and improve rural infrastructure.
