Films screened in China raked in more than 44 billion yuan (about US$6.78 billion) in 2015, a 48.7-percent yearly increase and the highest since 2011, according to a statement released by the country's film watchdog last year. Domestic films took in 27.1 billion yuan, or 61.58 percent of the total, maintaining a clear dominance over the country's cinema market.

Ye Ning, CEO of China's film production company Huayi Brothers, attributed the prosperous film market to China's economic progress which has improved people's living standards, while attending a sub-forum during the 2016 annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia in China's southernmost island province of Hainan on Thursday.

China's screening numbers exceeded 30,000 last year in more than 6,000 cinemas. The figure was only 13,118 in 2012.

Though the rapid growth of the film market has attracted enormous resources and investments, China's limited number of film and art universities hinders the further development of the market, said Xu Zheng, a renowned actor and director, whose latest film "Lost in Hong Kong" earned about 1.6 billion yuan in mainland box offices.
