A man's smartphone suddenly "exploded" in his backpack several hours after he got off a plane in Nanjing, Yangtse.com reported on Monday.

The man, surnamed Song and from Taiwan, said that while he was having dinner with his friends in a restaurant at about 8 pm on March 4, he suddenly heard what might have been an explosion and immediately after that he felt "something burning on his back."

Mr. Song said the explosive article turned out to be his smartphone in his backpack. He bought the phone in Taiwan last year. There were obvious burnt marks and cracks on the phone shell.

The man explained that he was on a business trip in Nanjing and his flight arrived at the airport from Taiwan at 11:00 am that day. He used the words "phone self-ignition" to describe the dreadful scene, saying that "if it had happened on the airplane, the consequences might be very serious."

Mr. Song said he had contacted the producer's customer service center who promised to arrange an appointment to give him a reply and solution.
