6 functional zones contribute half of Beijing's economy

Beijing's six high-end industrial functional zones -- Zhongguancun Science Park, the Financial Street, the Beijing Central Business District, Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, the Shunyi Airport Economic Zone and the Olympic Central Area, have contributed about 50 percent of the capital's economy in the past decade.

According to data released by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the revenues of companies above designated size in the six zones reached 3.3 trillion yuan (US$ 495 billion) in the first half of 2017, a year-on-year increase of 9.8 percent.

The six zones have become a key driver of economic growth. In 2016, their added value reached 1.2 trillion yuan, accounting for 48.3 percent of the city's GDP and 59.9 percent of the city's economic growth, up 7.6 percentage points and 15.1 percentage points from 2011 respectively.

The revenues of companies above designated size in Zhongguancun Science Park, Beijing Central Business District and the Olympic Central Area reached 2.14 trillion yuan, 0.44 trillion yuan and 0.2 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 16.7 percent, 25.7 percent and 20.9 percent respectively.

The six zones are home to a number of regional headquarters of transnational companies and international financial institutions, which has greatly helped promote international exchanges.

According to data from January to November of 2016, the income of foreign financial companies above designated size reached 43.09 billion yuan, up 19.1 percent from 2011.

As the first national self-dependent innovation demonstration area, Zhonguancun has given full play to individual advantages and made notable progress. In the first half of this year, the invention patent applications and invention patents granted reached 13,000 and 6,938, up 5.8 percent points and 4.8 percent points respectively from last year.

The passenger traffic of Beijing Capital International Airport in the Shunyi Airport Economic Zone has reached 94.39 million, up 20 percent compared with 2011, ranking second in the world for seven straight years.
