Japan's industrial production fell 0.8 percent in July from the previous month, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, (METI) said in a preliminary report on Thursday.

According to the ministry, the drop in factory output in the recording period comes on the heels of a revised 2.2-percent rise in June.

The seasonally adjusted index of output at factories and mines stood at 101.5 against the base of 100 for 2010, the ministry said.

The ministry's data also showed that the index of industrial shipments was down 0.7 percent to 100.0, while inventories, meanwhile, retreated 1.2 percent at 107.8 in the recording period.
