Beijing recently announced an action plan to promote the deep integration between the manufacturing industry and the internet. At the announcement press conference jointly held by the Municipal Government News Office and the Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, city officials said Beijing will focus on key enterprises and ensure network connectivity in over 60 percent of the smart manufacturing equipment.

Success stories of smart manufacturing already abound in Beijing. The automation of producing instantly soluble Chinese medicine that is developed by a Beijing-based enterprise has been widely applied to over 1,000 hospitals nationwide. Apart from healthcare and medical equipment, companies in Beijing have pioneered in fields such as metro security control, operational supervision, automatic navigation, and relay protection. They represent the progress made in internet-based smart manufacturing.

The action plan proposes that, by 2020, a framework featuring upgraded traditional industries and development of new economic driving force -- with the aid of information technology -- will take shape in Beijing. With a remarkably increased degree of integration of IT and industry, the proportion of smart manufacturing equipment will surpass 65 percent, the proportion of network-connected equipment will be over 60 percent, the utility ratio of cloud platforms will be over 75 percent, and the ratio of enterprises that employ network-based collaborative production methods will be higher than 45 percent.

Ren Shiqiang, deputy inspector of the Municipal Commission of Economy and IT, said that “Made in Beijing” will gradually turn to “Created in Beijing” in the future to ensure the city’s strategic position in leading the entire country towards innovation. To facilitate such development, Beijing will support 100 projects in smart manufacturing that cover key industries such as high-end equipment, electronic information, automobile, bio-pharmaceuticals, and aerospace.

In addition, Ren said that Beijing will promote new models of network-connected manufacturing and help build industry leaders. A series of industrial cloud and big data platforms will be established in Beijing by 2020 to serve the need of the surrounding regions and connect to the whole nation.
