In the past nine months, those over 50 years old have spent nearly 5,000 yuan (752 U.S. dollars) on average shopping online per month, buying an average of 44 items, according to data released by Alibaba, Nanfang Daily reported.

When Chongyang Festival, also known as Double Ninth Festival falling on October 28, 2017, was designated as Seniors' Day in 1989, many brick and mortar stores began sales promotions for the festival. The older generations not only buy from offline retailers, they also occupy a large percentage of the online shopping market. There are nearly 30 million consumers over 50 years old registered on the Taobao shopping platform, with those from 50 to 59 years old accounting for 75 percent of them.

Many older consumers also use electronic payments, such as WeChat or Alipay.

"There is no difference between our parent's generation and young people in using smartphones and embracing the new life that the internet created for us," one young man said.
