Chinese stocks closed mixed Friday, with the Shanghai index edging up after posting its biggest one-day percentage loss this year Thursday amid signs of tighter liquidity.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was 0.06 percent higher to close at 3,353.82, while the Shenzhen Component Index lost 0.06 percent to close at 11,168.39.

Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 440.2 billion yuan (about 66.89 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading day.

Shares in non-ferrous metal and chemical fertilizer producers led the gains, while electronic device and telecommunication sectors were among the biggest losers.

China Unicom, the country's second-largest telecom company, saw its shares down 5.01 percent to close at 7.78 yuan.

Bucking the trend, shares in China Northern Rare Earth High-tech gained 5.82 percent to close at 13.99 yuan and Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group rose by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Altogether, nearly 30 stocks rose to the daily limit across the two boards.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style enterprises, lost 0.68 percent to close at 1,782.66.
