Long, the Secretary General of the BFA from January 2003, recommended former Chinese ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong as his successor.

Long's announcement came after the changing of the Charter of the BFA which limits the Secretary General's maximum serving time to two terms, which lasts for eight years.

The BFA held its first meeting in 2002. This year's conference, under the theme of "Green Recovery: Asia's Realistic Choice for Sustainable Growth", will officially open on Saturday morning.
