Lexus Australia on Monday announced the company will recall more than 1,000 cars to fix a potential problem with engine value springs, part of a global recall of about 270,000 vehicles announced by Toyota in Japan.

Lexus Australia spokesman Mike Breen said 1,120 vehicles would be recalled in Australia with the action covering both GL and LS Lexus models fitted with V8 engines.

The recall notice said because of slight variations in the manufacturing process, excessive stress to the valve springs might lead to cracking and potential breakage.

The problem could result in engines stalling.

In a statement, Breen said there had been one report of an engine misfire in Australia but no reports of engines stalling and no accidents as a result of the issue, adding that the cars affected were manufactured between February 2007 and August 2008.

Owners would be contacted by Lexus to arrange for the valve springs to be replaced.

According to Australian Associated Press, Toyota told the Japanese government of the recall on Monday with spokesman Paul Nolasco saying the company apologized for inconveniencing its customers.

"We hope to fix the problem soon," Breen said.
