Kuomintang (KMT) chairman Wu Poh-hsiung wished the 2008 Beijing Olympics success when he visited Olympic venues in Beijing on Wednesday morning.

"We brought the best wishes from Taiwan, and hope that the Beijing Olympics will go smoothly and successfully," Wu said.

The KMT chief visited the National Stadium, known as the Bird's Nest, and the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center Baseball Field on Wednesday.

"It is the largest and the most spectacular of all the main Olympic venues that I have been to," said Wu during his visit to the Bird's Nest.

He said he had never seen an Olympic center with such a steel structure and of such grand size. Asked by journalists if he would come to watch the opening ceremony, Wu said: "I hope I will have the opportunity."

Baseball is one of the most popular sports in Taiwan. In the Wukesong Baseball Field, Wu said the Olympic venue would be the main attraction for Taiwan fans. He expected the Taiwan baseball team would perform well and he believed the mainland would cheer them on warmly.

When presented with the gift of a baseball, Wu said he was an excellent pitcher when he was a student and had won a county championship.
