A glance into Zhouqu

SATELLITE IMAGES

The image on the left shows the town of Zhouqu, Gansu province, in July 2008. The photo on the right was taken on Sunday following the landslide.

SPLIT IN TWO

The landslide, which hit early Sunday, nearly split the town in two. It fl attened an area 5 kilometers long and 500 meters wide.

RIVER OF MUD

The landslide buried 300 homes and damaged another 700. While it missed the main government buildings (1), it destroyed a primary school (2).

THE RESCUE

More than 4,500 people are involved in rescue eff orts. 5,000 sleeping bags, 5,200 tents, 20,000 coats and 8,000 folding beds have been sent to Zhouqu.
