The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government proposes 50 million HK dollars in donation to the provincial government of Gansu via the Disaster Relief Fund to provide relief for the mudslide victims, a government spokesman said Friday.

The HKSAR government will seek the approval of the Legislative Council Finance Committee for the supplementary provision required, said the spokesman.

As the Legislative Council is now in recess, the spokesman said the Finance Committee chairman has agreed to convene a special meeting as soon as possible to examine this application.

The spokesman said the government will promptly consult the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee (DRFAC) once the funding application is approved by the Finance Committee so as to provide timely relief for the victims.

The DRFAC will also consider adopting a special mechanism to enable the government to respond quickly to applications from relief organizations with a view to providing relief to the victims speedily.
