Macao mourns Chinese mainland mudslide victims

With the national and special administrative region (SAR) flags at half-mast, Macao joined other parts of China in a national mourning Sunday for the mudslide victims in Zhouqu County northwest China's Gansu province.
To pay tribute to the mudslide victims in Zhouqu county, the national and the Macao SAR flags were flown at half-mast at the SAR Headquarters, the Liaison Office of Central People's Government in Macao SAR, the Golden Lotus Square and other public buildings.
Meanwhile, more than 100 officials of the Liaison Office observed a three-minute silent tribute to the mudslide victims in front of its building after lowering the national flag at half-mast Sunday morning.
The SAR government also ordered the suspension of all public entertainments and shows on Sunday, including the postponing of the Macao Galaxy Entertainment FIVB World Grand Prix 2010 that was scheduled to be held from Friday to Sunday.
Local casino resorts also displayed mourning words on their large outdoor LCD screen paying tribute to the dead in the landslide.
Torrential rain prompted an avalanche of sludge and debris to crash down on the county seat of Zhouqu on Aug.8, ripping many houses off their foundations. The mudslide in Zhouqu County has left at least 1,239 people dead and 505 others missing.
