Being the only ruling party in China is one of the things that the Communist Party of China (CPC) gets criticized for by the West, but European scholars have affirmed it is the most suitable path for China.

Kjeld Erik Brodsgaard, director of the Asia Research Center at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, used his country's own political situation to demonstrate how complicated it can be to create a ruling coalition.

"It's very difficult to reach political decisions because of the different interests that must be aligned," said Brodsgaard on Oct. 13 while attending the CPC in Dialogue with the World 2016 in Chongqing. "So, we call it democracy, and we are happy about it but sometimes this kind of democracy makes it very difficult to move ahead, to make important decisions and to implement them."

Brodsgaard compared China with India, a pair that often gets compared in Western countries. He noted that Western people tend to think that India will outperform China in the long run since India has a Western type of democracy. But, in reality, he said that India is developing slowly with difficulty in implementing policies and building infrastructure.

By contrast, the CPC, as the only ruling party of China, is exempted from the Western-style interparty struggles that reduce efficiency.

"In China, you can implement policies much better. That's related to the fact that you have an able CPC that's able to make good policies for the country and implement them in an efficient way," said Brodsgaard. "Meanwhile, China has eight so-called democratic parties, and the CPC makes efforts to discuss with them in the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference," he said, referring to the national advisory body of China.

Brodsgaard said that communication platforms such as the CPC in Dialogue with the World help other countries learn about the CPC and China, including how the CPC will manage to stay the only ruling party and how it has made China the second largest economy in the world.

Brodsgaard's view is shared by his countryman Flemming Christiansen, a professor of China Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, and also a frequenter of the CPC in Dialogue with the World.

Christiansen said that the dialogue mechanism will lead to more transparency and openness for the CPC.
